According to an announcement, Carrefour Jiangdong Store has officially “bid farewell” to the people of Yongcheng, Ningbo. After the store closed, Carrefour still has one store left in Ningbo, the one in Beilun Fubang Century Commercial Plaza.
Once upon a time, foreign supermarkets became a hot topic in street talk. In recent years, however, with Tesco, Auchan and Walmart stores in Ningbo, the news of being acquired, laying off stores or completely withdrawing from the market seems to have become a reality.
Take away the memories of a generation
In 1999, Carrefour’s first store in Ningbo, Jiangdong Branch, was officially opened. On February 1, 2008, Carrefour Qinqiao Store became the second , followed by the Carrefour Beilun Store.
For the people of Ningbo at that time, such a “hypermarket” had never been seen before. The shelves were full of all categories of goods “piled up into mountains”; One-stop shopping for all needs, but also made shopping more efficient and convenient; There was even a shuttle bus to and from the nearby neighborhood in front of the supermarket… It can be said that Carrefour can be regarded as the shopping “paradise” in the memory of Ningbo people.
However, the good times did not last long, and on April 1, 2014, the Carrefour Qinqiao store, which had only been open for 6 years, was officially closed. Today, 8 years later, Carrefour Jiangdong Store also announced its closure.
It is understood that Carrefour’s successive closures are not an isolated case in Ningbo. Since 2018, Carrefour stores in Beijing, Harbin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Chongqing and other cities have closed. In the first half of this year alone, Carrefour closed 24 stores, including Beijing’s Zhongguancun store, Asia’s largest store. During this period, Carrefour did not open new stores.
In the context of the recession of the traditional retail industry, Carrefour’s gradual withdrawal from the historical stage is only a microcosm. In June 2019, Walmart Ningbo OCT announced its closure; In June 2021, Wal-Mart’s Yuyao Chengdong Road branch also ceased business; Auchan closed the Auchan Jiangnan store and the Ningbo Liyuan store in 2020…
