The growing talent base of Hefei, East China’s Anhui province, is to have its third Foreign Expert’s Book House at the University of Science and Technology of China, offering a new window through which the world can view and understand China.

The proposed facility will display a kaleidoscope of books related to Chinese politics, economy, culture and diplomacy published in multiple foreign languages, including English, Spanish and Russian. Interested foreign teachers can take out the books for free.

Faezeh Zareey from the US, who has taught English at the university for two years, showed great interest in the upcoming book house at the school library.

Having been in China for more than 20 years, Faezeh hoped to develop a deeper understanding of Chinese culture through the books.

“The world is like a garden,” Zareey said. “We have different cultures like flowers in a garden. Every culture is beautiful and we need to learn about each other’s culture, especially their unity and diversities.”

The other two Foreign Expert’s Book Houses in the city are located in the Xinhua Bookstore in Sanxiaokou subdistrict and Hefei International Talent City.

The book houses are established with the support of the Foreign Talent Research Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Science and Technology of Anhui Province. It is meant to better acquaint expats with the country that they currently live in and highlight their unique role in external publicity.

To date, there are a dozen Foreign Expert’s Book Houses and Bookshelves across the country, with more than 10,000 books in circulation.

Noticeably, the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region has taken the lead in promoting the books via both brick-and-mortar facilities and online channels.

More measures, like offering electronic version of the books, can be taken to catch up with modern trends and expand exposure. Meanwhile, a large population of foreign students can also be introduced to the reader group, suggested Deng Zhuoyuan, an official from the Department of Science and Technology of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, at a symposium on Sept 2.

Wang Haiyang, deputy director of the Foreign Talent Research Center, and Xu Qingqun, editor in chief of International Talent, as well as other representatives from different provinces and autonomous regions, also shared their visions on how to advance the construction of Foreign Expert’s Book Houses (Bookshelves) at the meeting.
