China is the world’s largest producer and seller of electric bicycles. After years of development, electric bicycles have gradually become an important means of transportation for people to travel on short distances. However, because many electric bicycle products are becoming larger, heavier and faster, some of the indicators exceed the legal standards.
In addition, due to the poor fire-retardant performance of some electric bicycles, the number of fire incidents caused by these bicycles in recent years has gradually increased, resulting in serious casualties and property losses.
As early as last May, the China State Administration of Market Supervision and National Standardization Administration Committee approved and issued a newly revised Technical Specification for Electric Bicycles. The Regulation stipulates that a compulsory national standard will be formally implemented as from April 15, 2019,after which e-bikes that fail to meet the standards will not be allowed on the road.
