By 2025, 3 out of 10 Ningbo People will be elderly

October 4 is China’s tenth elderly day, and on September 28, Ningbo City held a ceremony to celebrate the tenth national elderly festival and the launching ceremony of the 2022 “Respect for the Elderly Month” activity. The reporter learned from the scene of the event that as of the end of last year, the city’s registered elderly population aged 60 and above was 1.626 million, accounting for 26.3% of the total registered population, of which 1.21 million were over 65 years old, accounting for 19.6% of the total household registration population, which has approached deep aging.

Ningbo entered the aging society in 1987, which is an area with an earlier population aging, a faster aging rate and a higher degree of urbanization in China. By the end of 2021, the proportion of the city’s registered elderly population aged 60 and above was 7.4 percentage points higher than that of the whole country, and 2.6 percentage points higher than that of the whole province. Among them, 226,000 people over the age of 80 are elderly, accounting for 13.9% of the elderly population.

It is estimated that by 2025, the city’s registered elderly population will be close to 2 million, accounting for about 30%, which means that in every 10 Ningbo people, 3 of will be elderly.
