Hefei was ranked 16th among global scientific research cities, in the latest release by Nature Magazine, jumping 4 places from last year

This ranking is done by analyzing the scientific research output of 82 natural science journals tracked by the Nature Index in 2021 in major cities and metropolitan areas around the world.

As a comprehensive national science center, Hefei has a solid foundation in the above-related aspects, such as the University of Science and Technology of China, the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and many other globally influential universities and institutes, and has large scientific devices such as fully superconducting tokamak nuclear fusion experimental equipment and steady-state strong magnetic field.

The reason why it can continue to maintain the rise of scientific research strength is closely related to Hefei’s continuous new breakthroughs in recent years.

The steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device is an “old” big scientific device in Hefei, and in August this year, this device climbed the “peak of science and technology” again. Its hybrid magnet produces a steady-state magnetic field of 452,200 gauss, breaking the world record for the same type of magnet that has been sealed for 23 years, and becoming the highest steady-state magnetic field in the world that can support scientific research. There are also the new quantum computers “Chapter 9” and “Zu Chongzhi”, and the “artificial sun” experimental device continues to break the world record… In the past two years, Hefei has been marching towards the breadth and depth of science and technology.

At the same time, Hefei’s scientific and technological innovation resources are constantly expanding and “accepting new”.

In November this year, the main construction of the national major science and technology infrastructure project located in the Sangang Big Scientific Device Concentration Zone in Luyang District and the fourth major scientific device in Hefei-fusion reactor host key system comprehensive research facility park made key progress, completed more than 100 key milestone construction tasks and the design, pre-research and test verification of core components, and entered the stage of development, on-site integration and debugging of some key components from the laboratory R&D and testing stage of subsystems. Today, Hefei has 12 large scientific installations under construction and planning, becoming one of the cities with the highest concentration of large scientific installations in China. In the past two years, a series of cutting-edge scientific and technological innovation platforms such as the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, and the Hefei Ion Medical Center have also accelerated their rooting.

In the past two years, Hefei has also continued to strengthen innovation-driven top-level design, deepen the reform of the scientific and technological system, and stimulate the vitality of innovation in the whole society with a more optimized innovation ecology.

For example, the “Hefei Science and Technology Innovation Regulations” was promulgated, and a special class for the transformation of scientific and technological achievements was set up to actively dock and serve many key universities and institutes in Fei, such as China University of Science and Technology. At the same time, Hefei continues to strengthen the guidance of policy funds, focusing on key links such as the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, enterprise research and development, and innovation platform construction, and guides and stimulates all kinds of innovation subjects to improve their scientific and technological innovation capabilities to the greatest extent. In such an environment, Hefei’s scientific research strength is still increasing.
